Musk’s first company Zip2 was created in 1995 with his brother Kimbal, and he started selling an online city guide for the newspaper publishing industry. Compaq eventually acquired the company for $ 300 million in cash and $34 million in stock options. Musk received 22% of the sale he used to fund X.com, an online bank that eventually became Paypal. X.com merged with Confinity, another payment service provider, to form PayPal, which eBay acquired for $1.5 billion in 2002. He also served as CEO of Zip2 from 1995 to 1999 and X.com until 2000. Paypal was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion for a 32% stake in the company. Musk resigned as an executive chairman after the merger in January 2002 but remained a board member until March 2004.

Musk’s life changed forever when he was approached by the CEO of PayPal, Peter Thiel, and other investors in a Palo Alto, California cafe to found a new company called SpaceX. Musk was an avid fan of the sci-fi show Stargate and wanted to create a private company that would pursue space exploration and becomes closer to Mars. He applied for US government funding which was turned down due to his lack of space industry experience. He also applied for financial assistance from NASA, but they also turned it down. He then appeared on The Colbert Report, where he proposed that humans should build a city on Mars.
