Introduction :
Rishi Sunak is a British politician and investor born in Southampton, England, on May 12, 1980. He has held the positions of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party since October 20, 2022. He has served in two cabinet posts under Boris Johnson, most recently serving from 2020 to 2022 as the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Early life of Rishi Sunak :
Sunak was conceived into an immigrant family. After his grandparents moved to East Africa from Punjab in northwest India, he was born to his mother in Tanzania and his father in Kenya. Following the 1960s relocation of their families to Southampton in southern England, they fell in love and married. The Father of Sunak joined the National Health Service as a general practitioner. Sunak, the oldest of their three children, finally kept the records for his mother, a pharmacist who owned and ran a small drugstore. Later, during his political career, Sunak would compare her principles and those of Margaret Thatcher, the symbol of the Conservative Party, the daughter of a grocer, and his own experiences working in the family business.
Sunak was able to attend Winchester College, a prestigious private institution that has produced no less than six chancellors of the Exchequer, thanks to his parents’ efforts and savings for his education. Sunak was the school newspaper editor and the “head boy” at Winchester. He worked as a server at an Indian restaurant in Southampton over the summer. Sunak continued his education by enrolling in Lincoln College, Oxford, where he studied philosophy, politics, and economics, a major attained by many future prime ministers. In that location, he served as president of the Oxford Trading & Investment Society, which offered college students the chance to learn about financial markets and international trading. Sunak worked as an intern for the Conservative Party while studying at Oxford.
Political career :
Sunak started working for the Conservative Party in 2010. During this time, he also got associated with Policy Exchange, a prominent conservative think tank, and in 2014 he was appointed head of the BME Research Unit. A Portrait of Modern Britain, a pamphlet by Sunak and Saratha Rajeswaran, the deputy head of the BME unit, was released by Policy Exchange that same year. Sunak was selected by the Conservative Party in 2014 to run for the House of Commons constituency of Richmond in North Yorkshire, a safe Conservative seat long held by former party leader William Hague (1997–2001). Sunak was chosen with a resounding majority in May 2015. He entered office as a strong proponent of Brexit and a staunch Eurosceptic. He asserted that Brexit would lead to “freer, fairer, and more prosperous” conditions in the UK. He would be returned to office in 2017 and 2019, and he supported Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit proposals three times.
He served as a parliamentary private secretary at the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy and a member of the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs Select Committee from 2015 to 2017. He was elected undersecretary of state at the Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government in January 2018, his first ministerial position.
Personal Life :
Sunak joined Goldman Sachs as an analyst in 2001 after receiving his degree from Oxford, and he remained there until 2004. He later studied for an MBA at Stanford University as a Fulbright scholar. He met his future wife, Akshata Murthy, the daughter of billionaire Indian businessman and Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy. Sunak quit TCI in 2009 to join Theleme Partners, a different hedge fund. In the same year, he wed Akshata Murthy, with whom he would have two children. The couple started to build a sizable fortune thanks to Sunak’s commercial success, and his wife has a 0.91 percent ownership stake in Infosys. The Sunday Times estimated their wealth in 2022 to be around £730 million ($877 million).
